It's very similar to last year's word count tracker. I did put in a lock on some formula fields so that a simple mistake wouldn't lead to hours of frustration.

January has already been a busy month for me. And this is going out a little later than I hoped to do it. Below, you'll find some images of the tracker. The links to the pages are on the bottom of the post.

The first page is a statistics overview page with a chart that tracks your word count by month over the year and a place to keep track of your WIP status both finished state or revised. You put in a yearly goal in the yellow box and it will calculate how many words per month you need to write.

The second page keeps track of your WIP and Revisions The circular charts are for your in progress WIP. The first table is for your WIP in revision and can link to the revision page. The second table is a finished WIP tracker. It records finished WIP and length. You can link the finished total directly from the WIP page.

The third page is a month by month word count tracker with a chart beside it. If you're focusing on revision or administrative duties you can note it on the day. You'll need to enter the days total here if you've written anything. The stats page uses the totals from this page.

The next page is a sprint tracker page. If you do sprints, you can use this to keep track of them.

This is the actual WIP tracker. There are three of them in case you work on multiple stories as I do. You can keep a copy blank and ready to go. You input your expected word count. If you don't know enter something, you can change it later. Goal word count, by this I mean daily word count. This comes in when your writing session totals. If you make your total, the daily words cell will change color when it gives you your count. A deadline date. Again, pick a date. You can change it as long as you don't have an actual deadline. There are also cells for percent complete, your average words, the target words per day, total words to date. There's a completion date cell. This would be projected completion date based upon the average words. Days to completion is the last cell on the top row.

On the table, you'll find the date, total word count, end word count, sprint total (mainly so you can keep track of days when you do sprints), Daily words, percent today, words left, percent complete, and notes so that you can keep track of important facts. You'll find a chart to the side that will fill as your total increases.

The last page is a revision table. You can list the tasks to be revised when you check off the task, the task will strike through and be counted as percent complete.

There are instructions for this, perhaps a little too many instructions. Basically on all pages except for the revision page, you fill in the areas that are highlighted yellow or have a yellow header. I'd recommend copying the sheet and keeping a blank WIP sheet available-because copying one that already has stuff on it and erasing the data there is a pain.
As 2016 comes to a close, I'm firming up my plans and goals. I've worked out the plans for the first three months and an overview of the yearly goals. I know that I want to get more published and at least some of my books rereleased this year. I'm trying to make sure that I don't set myself up for failure by not being reasonable with the goals.

At the moment, I'm finishing up some end of year items (even if technically it's the New Year.) Mainly I'm updating my word count spreadsheets, changing them to 2017. I've been so busy with the revisions that I left this until now.

I'm still focusing on being happy and living a balanced life. I think keeping that in mind last year helped a lot. I know I liked writing more when I was happier.

My immediate plans for January are to finish up the revisions that I'm working on, get another book in the revision queue and continue to working on Stone Passions 2 and Penny's Story. Ideally, I'd like to get through one of those stories this month, but I'm also going to be working on a schedule that might help me get caught up with revisions to the new stories I have written (so I can work more on the older stories.) I plan to start plotting a couple stories in January so that I'll have something ready to go when I do finish one of the stories I'm working on.

Happy Reading and have a Happy New Year!

December, it usually hits pretty hard and seems to go by so fast. This December is no exception.

Amid all the Christmas songs (I do like listening to them), searching for the right present, and writing, I'm also researching like a madwoman. I haven't yet gotten to the goal setting and looking to the New Year yet, but I'm sure the panic will set in sometime soon that I should be doing that as well.

I'm finally back to making progress, both on actual writing and revisions. It feels good to be back on track, especially with the revisions. That's been stagnant, stalled, or stymied for a while now. Normal practices weren't working. I went to pen and paper and it's working for adding the new scenes that are needed.

With as scattered as I've been over the past month, I'm sort of glad I didn't do NANO. I'd probably still be wondering what happened and why I couldn't get it together. Sometimes, the author brain won't let go.

Other times, it lets ideas flow right through. Not to mention things I need to remember. Lists have become my friend.

On one of my lists is the title of all of the written but not revised books, not counting those that need to be re-released. That's a separate list. But back to my main point, the list of to be revised books, I'll probably skip ahead to Leslie's story and begin going through it after I finish the one I'm working on now. Which will hopefully be finished before the end of the year. I know Leslie's story will need less work than the one in front of it. So I'll do Leslie and then begin working on the other.

Happy Reading!

Sometimes a scene just won't come easily. It happens occasionally. Sometimes it happens even on a scene that you know is absolutely necessary. It needs to be in the book. Below are a few suggestions of what sometimes helps me take away that blocking wall brick by brick.

Come at it from a different viewpoint. Even if it's something to help you get a better grip on the scene that you don't plan on using in the final draft. If necessary, you can fix it in the final draft. You might find that the new viewpoint works better than the one you first planned.

Ask questions of the characters. You might find that something you learn from the answers to the questions reveals a problem with the scene that you didn't realize was there before.

Brainstorm or mind map a different way of coming at the scene.

Freewrite: Just start writing something. Once your fingers are moving. The words might start flowing.

For a focused version of freewriting, try summarizing the scene. It might let you get past the problem area. The words will begin to flow. Often after a little summarizing, the story will take control and you can finish the scene.

Skip the scene and go on to the next. You can go back and finish it later.

Allow the scene to not be perfect. In a paraphrase of a quote: You're shoveling sand in the first draft. You can make sure it's a beautiful castle later.

Step away from the computer or notepad and relax. Go for a walk. Find something that takes your mind off of the problem and allows you to get some distance.

Try writing in a different place. If you write at a desk, move to another part of the house, outside, or a cafe. (It's a little cold for outside here, though.)

Try a different way of writing. If you are on the computer all the time, try a journal or notebook paper. Or you can try a different type of software for a change of pace. Use Word or Scrivener, try google docs or another piece of software.

Sprints: Writing sprints that is. I can't recommend these enough. The words build up from writing in short chunks of time that almost anyone can carve out. Tell yourself I'm only going to write for fifteen minutes. Sometimes a short time limit will free you from the tension that might be holding you back.

So there are some of the tips that have helped me get past writer's block. Do you have any tricks that get you through that wall?

A: After my time in the Army, it seemed like the natural thing to do. I served three tours in Afghanistan. Even though I went to college after I got out, I don’t think I ever moved to the rhythms of civilian life. I like service. I was overjoyed when the Bureau accepted me. I love the strong sense of mission, the history, the camaraderie. I love to keep people safe.

Q: What was the most challenging part of your training?

A: Learning precision shooting. The weapons I used during my service weren’t exactly designed for accuracy. Lucky for me, my partner is the best shot in the Philadelphia field office. I’ve improved a lot since being assigned here.

Q: What has been the most challenging part of being an agent?

A: Learning to be patient. For example, I refused to let go of a case this past summer. We were notified when a park ranger found a human spleen in the bushes in Independence National Historical Park. We tested the DNA and ran it through the database and discovered that the spleen came from a body found that winter by the Philadelphia police. All its internal organs had been removed in some kind of sick ritual sacrifice.

My boss told me to leave the case to Philly PD because they found the body, but I wouldn’t let it go. I asked the boss for permission to pursue it on my own time, which he quite generously granted, but with limits. I blew past those limits. I didn’t listen.

We’re still embroiled in that investigation. In fact, we’ve discovered a snuff pornography ring that may involve human trafficking and murder, so I got lucky. The results glossed over my sins. But I should have explained things to my boss. I shouldn’t have gone behind his back. I need to regain his trust. I need to understand that this is large organization that moves in its own time. I work for the FBI. It doesn’t work for me.

Q: What advice would you give to new agents?

A: Learn whatever you can from the more experienced agents. During your first year, keep your damn mouth shut. If you’re certain you’re right, keep your damn mouth shut, because you don’t know anything and you’re probably wrong. Remember that the law and processes you learn from books are barely recognizable in the real world.

Q: Is work/life balance important to you? Have you managed to achieve this?

A: That’s one of those things that is so subjective, I don’t know if my answer will have any value. Being an FBI agent is not an identity you shed when you leave the federal building at night. Sometimes, it’s an eight to six job. Other times you won’t see your friends for weeks. Stakeouts can seriously erode your hygiene habits and your sanity, but they often result in the apprehension of seriously evil people. When it happens, it’s all worth it.

You can have a life. I play in a rock-n-roll band. Nothing like pouring 120 decibels out of a set of Marshall stacks to relieve stress. I will say that the people in your life need to be understanding. I’ve had to cancel practices and gigs because of my job. As for romantic relationships, I’ll tell you the truth. This job is hell on relationships.
Excerpt – Autumnal Equinox – Chapter 1

Set up: Barakiel, a superhuman warrior from another dimension, has just killed a gang of demons who attacked Zan O’Gara, the woman he loves. This shocking introduction to his true identity made Zan run away, but not before she called 911 and made a stand against the demons. Being an FBI agent, she was armed. She killed two of the beasts, but the gunfire resulted in another 911 call. Barakiel became catatonic in the wake of an emotional scene with Zan. The police arrived, and were handled by Pellus, Barakiel’s trusted friend. Pellus is a traveler adept, a type of Covalent who can manipulate the properties of matter and energy.

***

In a few minutes, Pellus heard the crunch of gravel in the driveway. He looked through the peephole as two police officers emerged from their vehicles, one tall and fat, the other short and muscular. They looked around suspiciously. Pellus thought it best to play a frightened senior citizen, so he adopted the dry, gray hair and shriveled skin of an old human. He opened the side door.

“Officers. I am so glad you are here! I thought I heard gunfire.”

“Yes, sir,” the short one said, as the other headed to the main building and peered in the window. “We received a couple of emergency calls. A woman said she was being attacked at this address, then a few minutes later someone reported shots fired.”

“No woman lives here officers. Maybe she is somewhere nearby.”

“Did you see anyone in your yard?”

“No, but I was afraid to look out.”

“Could you tell where the shots were coming from?” the officer asked, as his tall colleague rejoined them.

“No, I am sorry. It was confusing. They seemed like they were coming from everywhere.”

The two of them stepped away to confer. They obviously didn’t think Pellus could hear them. The tall one told the short one that he couldn’t see anyone in the house. He said the owner was obviously rich, and that the place would appeal to a burglar or a home invader. They stepped back to Pellus.

“Are you sure you didn’t see anyone?”

“Yes, I am sure.”

“Is this your place?”

“No. My nephew’s. I am watching it for him while he is away on a business trip.”

“Your nephew,” said the short one. He poked at a handheld device for a minute or two. “Uh, records show this place is owned by B&P Bridesburg, Ltd. What’s that?”

“My nephew’s company. His name is Rainer Barakiel.”

“Does he own a gun?”

“Not that I know of.”

“What’s with the get up?” asked the tall officer, pointing at Pellus’ brown robes.

“I am from Kyrgyzstan. This is how we dress at home.”

The officer frowned. “Mind if we look around?” he asked.

“Please do.” They headed toward the back of the main building, where the yard was sunk in darkness. Pellus followed. As they neared the edge of the building, the adept noticed goldish glints of color in the grass. For a moment, he was confused. Then he realized.

Shell casings from the gunfire!

He began to cough violently and stumble. The officers stopped walking. The short one grabbed Pellus’ arm.

“Are you all right, sir?”

Pellus waved him off and faced the back of the yard, his hand to his chest. He continued to cough and tremble. It gave him the chance to adjust his vision so he could see molecular structure of the cursed bits of metal against the structure of the grass and soil. He bent forward, pretending to catch his breath as he broke the bonds that held the metal in the form of shell casings. Tiny shards of metal remained in the grass.

I can only hope they do not notice. I have no time for anything else.

“Are you sure you’re all right, sir?” the short officer asked.

“Yes, please. Just give me a moment.”

Although it took much longer than Pellus would have liked, the short officer waited next to him, perhaps afraid he would keel over. The tall one walked over to the hedges that grew next to the compound wall and peered up at the elevated pipeline that ran along the south side of the property, a remnant of the chemical plant that had once operated there.

“I am sorry,” Pellus said when he had finished. “I will be fine. Do what you need to do.”

My planned post about the Branal didn't get posted on the date I planned. So here it is.

The Branal are a group of paranormal people in the Stone Passions world. They were in part inspired by several types of the sidhe. The Leanan Sidhe inspired the Branal's ability to draw power, although the Branal aren't vampiric muses. Their ability with fire comes from elemental aspects of certain fairies.

The Branal move between their culture and the human culture, mixing with ease. Their powers begin to manifest in their teenage years, but they strengthen slowly so that the Branal have time to learn to control it.

While males exclusively rule the gargoyle, females can lead the Branal. At the start of Stone Passions series, a female leads the Branal in Stone Cliff. She's taking care of the group for her brother, but it isn't because she's related to him, it's because she's strong enough to hold the group in his absence.

The abilities of a Branal depend on the strength of the persons power.

Fire-They can call fire. Most of the time it's thrown or used to burn, but those with more strength can use it in different ways.
Light-If they've learned the ability, they can use it to light the way or temporarily (sometimes not so temporarily) blind an opponent.
Teleportation-The very strong can use this ability to move from place to place in an instant.
Energy drain- They can drain energy and use this to defeat the Appari.
They can return the souls of those the Appari have drained and stolen the essence.
They can twist (as in turn spiritual energy). The shift in energy flow can stun enemies. If the twisting is continued it can kill, but that's rare and a very drastic step.
They're physically strong and not fragile.
Those with enough strength and will, can project a spirit version of themselves in another place.

Here's an excerpt of Naomi using some of these abilities:

The Appari backhanded the young man, knocking him to the ground. He fell and didn’t move, but the Appari didn’t advance on him. She turned to the woman she’d first attacked. As the being advanced, Naomi knew that she couldn’t let the thing get to her. She had to stop it before it took the woman’s life energy.

“Hey, you pale skinned hag, why don’t you come over here and try a taste of me.” She summoned the fire within her.

It pumped through her giving her a little confidence. She took slow steps forward, all too aware that she had no real idea what to do. The haggard being turned her head, but continued toward the woman. Naomi held her palm out flat and shot a bolt of fire toward the soul-stealing bitch.

The hot flame hit the woman. The smell of seared flesh carried on the wind. The Appari screamed and swung around to face Naomi. That did it. The creature lost its focus on the easy prey now.

Even if Naomi ran over, she might not get to the woman before the thing stole her soul. She had to stop it before it started drawing the spirit energy from her, and before the Appari fled. A body could only live so long without its spirit. A Branal or Gargoyle’s body would eventually die if the soul didn’t return to them.

“Be careful, Naomi.” Isaac’s words came to her as she approached the Appari.

Naomi didn’t shake her head, but wanted to look back at him. He wanted her to be careful while she fought a beast that could take her spirit. And he’d urged her to come over here and do this. It made no sense.

As her focus narrowed to the thing in front of her, her worries and fears fell away. She didn’t know how she’d do it, but she would kill this thing. Her body relaxed. She channeled her fire into the knife in her hand. The heat and fire were necessary. Claws could cut it, but the fire within its body hurt more.

The pain itself wouldn’t do much, but if she could hold it and hurt it enough, she should be able to take its energy. Hopefully, it didn’t have a soul within it. She didn’t know what to do with that either.
The Appari glared at her and swiped at her. Naomi jumped back, but lunged forward again. She swung her blade. It slashed across the being’s hip, drawing a screech from it.

A surge of exhilaration raced through her. She’d hurt it. A smile crossed her face. She hadn’t expected to do that yet. She hadn’t thought about what she was doing.
It came out on the 21st. I like this scene because I can so relate to Naomi here.
Setup: Naomi, a Branal, was caught at a theater in the gargoyle part of the city. Isaac and Neil have taken her back to their community. She's slipped away from them in the middle of the night and tried to escape. Neil caught up with her, took her phone, and destroyed it.

She stared at the destroyed technology. Her heartbeat pounded. She could feel it hitting her chest as heat washed through her. Her fists bunched at her side.

She kicked at him. Her foot slammed into his shin. He gasped and spat out a curse.

“Son of a bitch, you don’t fucking destroy someone else’s things. Do you know how much stuff I had on that phone? I had notes for my classes on that, asshole. Getting me a new phone won’t replace those.”
Blurb:
Naomi Hardin heads into Gargoyle territory to see a play without a
second thought. She never expected to run into any Gargoyles, much less
two men who claim she’s their mate. She’s drawn to the two Gargoyles but
will escape from them. Although they’re gorgeous, she has plans for her
life, and they don’t include biologically chosen mates.

Neil
Conrad and Isaac Phillips are thrilled to discover their mate at a
theater. Although she’s not happy, she’s trespassed into Gargoyle
territory and is fair game. They take her home to show her they belong
together, but discover they’ve brought her right into the path of
danger. Someone is targeting the Gargoyle. They must gain her trust and
love while they learn to trust her, as well, because they’ll need her
help against some of the attacks coming at them. They’ll have to face
the trouble coming for them in order to claim her love and begin their
life together.

Gargoyles have inspired me for a while. (Incidentally, I also am working on a straight fantasy gargoyle that's not related.) These gargoyles were inspired by by the architectural gargoyles, myths about them, and popular culture (everything from cartoons to movies.) This stories gargoyles don't hide out on buildings or actually turn to stone, although they can turn ... I'll get to that a little later.

Gargoyles live in clans. They are ruled by sets of leaders. Most often a set of three leaders. They are called to lead, but won't receive that call if they haven't met at least one of their bond partners. The leaders, the Cim, give the gargoyle clan stability and security and if needed they can calm their people or amp them up. The stability allows the territorial and aggressive gargoyle males to live in close proximity to each other without constant fighting and bloodshed.

Gargoyles skin does harden. Not turn to stone, but it will shield and help defend against blows in battle, especially when they're in gargoyle form. They're very strong and bulk up when they change into their winged form. Of course, they have wings and can fly, but in this modern world, find that a little more difficult. They can't do fly openly. Gargoyles are not out to the public and have to be careful about exposing themselves.

To get a little deeper into gargoyle abilities, the abilities of a gargoyle depend on the strength of the individual. The Cim and the betas are able to do more than the average gargoyle.

Most gargoyles can harden, slow down an opponent. The stronger gargoyles can do more than that. All gargoyles can create fire. (They also like it.) Those taught to be warriors are taught to channel it and they'll use it against their enemies: The Gobel and the Appari, as well as occasionally mages. It's the Appari that they have the most difficulty defeating, because the creature is more spirit than flesh. They can fight them and drive them off, but defeating them isn't easy.

So that's some of what a gargoyle can do. I'll share more with you as their story evolves.
Excerpt:

Naomi used the space to finish unbuttoning his shirt. She pulled the tails from his pants and pushed the fabric wide and down his arms. She drew her fingers across the flat discs of his nipples. Without a thought, she leaned down and swiped her tongue over the hardened nub. He groaned. His hands moved to her shoulders, lifting her mouth away from his chest.

“You’re not even close to hot enough to handle what you’re courting. Get me too hot and you’ll have a wild Gargoyle on your hands.” He pushed the fabric of her dress wide and eased it down her arms. He had to pull her arms down before he could tug it completely off. “I don’t want this in the way of my mouth.”

Once she heard the word mouth, she relaxed and let him push the fabric down to her waist. Her bra came off next. The garment sailed across the room. She didn’t care where it landed.

“Lean back against Neil. He’ll hold you while I give these a little attention.” Isaac drew his fingers across the hardened tips, rubbing back and forth.
The teasing brush seared through her. Moisture gathered between her thighs. She rocked her hips wanting more than the pressure of his cock against her. She wanted something inside her, preferably the thick length of his cock.

She relaxed back against the hard body behind her. She looked up when hands settled on her shoulders. He stared down at his. His brown eyes burned with heat. Surprise bubbled through her. She’d thought he might join them. The idea of both men making love to her thrilled her, although she didn’t know how it would work. She remembered the sheer pleasure when they’d both touched her out on the beach.

Isaac leaned toward her. Hot breath feathered over her breasts. She gasped as his mouth hovered over on taut nipple. Moist air puffed across the tip, teasing her. She licked her lips. His lips brushed back and forth for a moment. Damn, he knew how to drive a woman insane. Finally, his mouth opened over the nipple.

Her pussy clenched as his tongue drug across the stiff peak. She pressed against the ridge of Isaac’s cock as a rush of juices slid from her.

“Someone likes that.” Neil’s voice rumbled against her back. “Her sweet scent of cream and nutmeg just increased.”

She blushed as the words hit her, but the embarrassment didn’t lessen her passion. She threaded her fingers into Isaac’s hair and tried to pull his mouth closer. She wanted him to suck, nibble, and nip. The excitement rose becoming more demanding with each moment.

“Oh yeah, baby, you were made for this, for us.” The rumble of Isaac’s voice against her breast sent a shiver down her back. “And it’s cinnamon.”

His lips closed over the peak. He sucked hard, drawing in flesh. She gasped. The pulling tug pulsed through her. She arched into him. His other hand covered her breast. His fingers tightened over the mound before beginning a slow massage of the flesh. Moans rolled from her. Her thighs tightened and she rubbed against him. The slow grinding pressure drew a low rumble from him.
They take her home to show her they belong together, but discover they’ve brought her right into the path of danger. Someone is targeting the Gargoyle. Excerpt:
Isaac smiled. He didn’t know if it was luck or a curse. They’d find that out after they discovered what this woman was. He took the final step to the door and opened it.

He walked in half expecting to find the woman fighting with the young man, but she stood across from him, glaring. Isaac moved until he stood right in front of her. She turned to face him. He didn’t say a word, merely stared at her. She narrowed her eyes on him. Her blue eyes blazed with anger.

“Who the fuck are you and why did you have him bring me here? Because neither of you assholes is my sick friend.” She folded her arms across her chest.

Smart girl. He liked a woman with brains. “I am Isaac and you are in our territory. What are you?”

She blinked. Her mouth dropped open. She took a deep breath and her expression flattened.

“Your territory? I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said.

“Nice try. You can feel us, just as we can feel your power.” He took a slow step forward.

“What I am is none of your business. I’m here to watch a play and meet up with my friends afterward. I’m not disturbing you or anyone else.”

“You are disturbing me. Your presence on our territory is a challenge and an insult.” He stopped right in front of her forcing her to look up at him.

“Do I look like I’m challenging you? If you’re that insulted, I can leave and meet up with my friends on another day.” She tried to step around him.

He glided to the side and stopped her progress to the door. Her lips thinned.

“It’s not that simple, little one. You’re coming with us and you will tell us what you are.” Isaac smiled as she fidgeted

Isaac heard the snick as the door opened, but didn’t turn around to see who entered. He knew it would be Neil. He would want to make sure that the others didn’t play some type of game with him.

“I’m not going anywhere with you. Do you think I’m insane? You could be a killer.” She shook her head from side to side, her deep brown hair flying.

“You are though. Everyone is back in the theater now, and more than a few of the people on staff are with us. They’ll clear the way if we have to carry you out. No one will see you. No one will know where you went.” Neil stepped forward.
She narrowed her eyes. “If I tell you what I am now, can I walk out that door?”

“No, there are other things we need to clear up. We’re leaving now.” Isaac stepped out of her way waiting for her to precede him.

He expected her to make a run for it before they got her to the car. He’d let her attempt it. Showing her that she couldn’t escape them might prevent her from doing anything crazy. Hopefully.

She exhaled loudly and walked out of the door. Her body tensed and he noticed her head turning as she led the way. He lagged two steps behind her as they exited the hallway. He didn’t close the distance between them. He wanted her to make her move. Until she realized a connection existed between them, she needed to know that they could and would keep her with them.

He wasn’t thrilled that they had to kidnap their mate. He’d always thought if he found the woman meant to be his that she would be drawn to them. This woman hadn’t looked at him with anything other than suspicion. He didn’t know if she felt anything for them.

Their pheromones would ensure she wanted them, but he’d like to know that she experienced some attraction to them. Once they got her alone, and this issue of why they abducted her out of the way, they could discover if she felt the pull to them. They had to know what type of being she was, or if she posed a threat.

Her reactions hadn’t proven to be a threat, but he was biased. He wanted to have her in his life. He had a feeling she was young. Her attitude gave him that impression, even more than her looks. Plus, the fact that she came here at all and stayed when she sensed someone with power in the building.

She walked toward the door, her pace slow. Just before she reached it, she ran. She hit the door and ran out, swinging the door back. Isaac put his hand out to keep the door from hitting him. He ran out after her. He caught her on the sidewalk. He swept his arms around her and lifted her off her feet.

She screamed. The sound broke the evening quiet. He put his hand over her mouth. Her teeth sank into his palm. He gritted his teeth, but didn’t pull back. He didn’t want the human authorities involved. Not that he’d let her go if they did come, but it would create a scene they didn’t need.

No one walked in the streets, but people occupied the cafés and stores around the theater. Neil ran ahead to get the car. Isaac moved her to the shadows and tried to make it appear that she accompanied him voluntarily. He drew her closer and held her as he waited. Heat flared on his arm where her hand covered his it as she tried to pull his hand away from her mouth.

The heat increased. He smiled. That ability stirred his interest and did narrow down what she could be.

“The desire isn’t controlling you, Chloe. Can you tell me that you

weren’t attracted to us? That our pheromones are causing all of the
turned her to face him. His fingers glided over her cheekbone.

He was right, but she didn’t like admitting it. She’d had the desire

to run her hands over Tony’s chest in the store. There hadn’t seemed

to be the intensity to his scent in the store.

It's a cool morning here, rainy with the occasional rumble of thunder sounding so lightly that sometimes I wonder if I just imagined it. I'm getting some writing done this morning. At the moment, I'm working on a scene in Stone Passions II. I like the
heroine. Everything about this culture and community are new to her which makes it fun to introduce things.

It's good to get back to writing. October was horrible to my total word count. Everything seemed to conspire against me getting back on track.

What October was really good for though was ideas. I found ideas for at
least three new books and fleshed out a little on others. They're
written down and waiting for further exploration when I get to them.

I thought about doing NaNo again to kick my word count back into gear. I loved doing NaNo last year. I got far enough ahead that I was able to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday without worrying about rushing back to the computer.

I thought I could probably do that again. I already had a story plotted out. (Penny, by the way, would be the story I refer to here.) Then I sat down and looked at what I wanted to accomplish in the month. Revision of a couple things features heavily on that list. I definitely want to finish (A Cougar's Mates) Leslie's story soon. There are couple of other things there such as reconstructing and keeping up with a title list so that I don't have two unrelated books coming out with similar titles (again and in a close time period no less), but one of the most important notations on my list is to get back into a routine.

NaNo was great at getting me writing and focused solely on building that total word count. Although word count is a priority, the other things are also. So, no NaNo for me this year. Yes, I do kind of already miss the hectic rush of it, but instead of focusing on one story, I can move back and forth between my WIP as I normally do. And get those other important things done and maybe some pleasure reading as well.

Getting back into a routine has never been easy for me. I want to build a schedule where I can write early and wind down for the day with revisions. (Although revisions can sometimes be as intense as producing new words on a WIP.) So with luck and pushing past the resistance I've been feeling lately, I can get my schedule on track and working for me.

I'm also nearing the last of A Cougar's mates. Three more plot points to go, which is exciting. I've got Penny all plotted and ready to go. The only thing I need to do is print it out and put it in the binder that I'm using to help plan the day's work.

Today, I thought that I'd share a bit from the start of the Stone Passions II. Right now, I'm just calling it Moriah's Story. (This start and the title will change because it needs a sharper beginning, but that will wait until revisions.
“That I can understand.

“Them?” Moriah glanced at them and lowered her eyes. “Wait.

legal.”

“Legally, you’d marry one of them.” Callista lifted a shoulder.
“And you’d have to talk to them to discover if it’s just them or if there might
be another one.”

“Another one? You implied that you had a mate. Where is he?”
Moriah tilted her head.

“Yes, I’ve encountered part of them. They’re gargoyles, but
their set isn’t complete. There are two, but know there should be three. Until
they find the third, we won’t complete the mating.” Callista exhaled heavily.

“So do all relationships have two or three men with
gargoyles? And just because my eyes do that thing is it set in stone that I
have to be with them?” Moriah leaned forward.

“Some Branal choose to mate with a Branal that’s not the one
for them, but I haven’t ever heard of anyone not mating when gargoyles are
involved.” Callista lifted a shoulder.

“That would be because gargoyles never quit even if we have
to do things in a way other than the normal.” Cim Sin strolled over to the
table. “Why don’t you go talk with them? You’re never going to know how you
feel about them until you talk to them.”

Moriah glanced over at them and bit her lip. She nodded and
slowly rose to her feet and began walking over to them. Dante didn’t move. He
didn’t want to scare her into walking away from them.

First up, the really great news. I published this on my facebook page, but also wanted to do it here. I recently signed a contract with Siren Publishing for Capturing Their Flame: Stone Passions 1.

In Capturing Their Flame, two gargoyle males find their mate and bring her home. But danger has targeted the gargoyle and they'll have to protect her to keep her.

So the 1 on the end of that title. Yes, it means that it's a series right off the bat. I already have the second plotted out and ready to go.

I'm writing on Les right now and trying to get myself back in the flow. I've had a lull in productivity and am working on getting back to the routine that worked.

I'm revising Love's Bounty now. I need to do some world building for this story. As I wrote it, the focus changed and I need to flesh that out.

I'm still working on daily pages and mindful exercise.

I've also been trying a little planning and tracking in a bullet journal. I still track words and other things in excel. I heard about the bullet journal on one of the loops I'm on and decided to give it a try. At the moment, I'm not using anything other than a normal notebook I had lying around. There are some notebooks that some people recommend for it. Before I buy one, I wanted to make sure this was a good fit for me.

(I've tried several planning and organizing methods over the course of this year, trying to find something I like enough to keep doing. Some didn't last very long. Some I pushed myself to keep going on even when it caused me more time and effort than it saved to make sure that I give it a fair chance. One overwhelmed me and made everything I wanted to do seem more daunting than when I first started it.)

I'm still giving it time, but I do like it. I'm adding stuff to it to help it be more useful to me. Sort of a cross between bullet journal/writing notebook. And that's what I've been doing.

Happy Reading!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09203243506774271935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20150958.post-74475051276081170492016-09-27T06:30:00.000-05:002016-09-27T06:30:25.523-05:00The sweetest words and update #amwriting

I typed those sweet words on Fiery Bliss earlier. It's a wonderful feeling. (Still not sure about that title. I don't think it suits, but I'm putting off changing it until I get into the revisions. I'll give more thought to the themes, the characters, and action and work out what does fit with that story.) I'll put it aside and revisit it as soon as I can.

It will be a little while before I actually say hello to the characters in the stone Passions 2 story. For the next few days, I'll probably work exclusively on Leslie. The plot for that story is done, but there are some things I want to work on in the notebook before I get into the story. I have some handwritten notes that I haven't transferred over yet. Those need to make it in before the kitty who rips paper decides those look yummy and in need of a big hole in them.

A Cougar's Mates (Leslie's Story) is moving along. Most of the scenes haven't given me any problem at all, but you know there has to be one or two to throw a kink in the works.

I still haven't received an inkling about who should be after Leslie other than Penny, so I'm plotting out her book. Shonna and Dixie have been very quiet about their mates. Well, I do think I know one of Dixie's mates, but he isn't even in the city yet. She hasn't met him. He won't make an appearance until the next book if the characters behave.

I'm also trying to decide which witch to work on next in the Moon Witch stories and trying to discover which man will soon meet his match. I know which one deserves this chance, not only at love, but at a little payback for what was done to her. I'll have to do some more digging and thinking about which sister to choose and her man.

Aside from the revisions, that's almost all that's going on at the moment. More on what else is in the works in a later post

Happy Reading!
I'm still writing this story. This is about one thousand words from Chapter One. I hope you enjoy!

Leslie tossed back her drink and looked around the bar. The Wild Beat was rocking tonight and packed with cougar females. That was because she’d set up a plan. She couldn’t avoid the Chief forever. His brothers were home now or they would be soon. She wasn’t sure.

They added to the factor of possibly running into one of them when she was out. She did not want to run into one of them and go to their home to find it smelling like another woman. She felt possessive of them and because she’d caught John’s scent, her body had kicked into high gear.

She was pumping out pheromones, but luckily, they didn’t affect every male. They’d only heighten the arousal of her mates as theirs would for hers. Although other shifters around her would realize something was different about her.

In the last week, she hadn’t been comfortable. Not just because everything within her pushed her to go find her mate. No, she’d worried she might run into John every time she left her house. She knew he didn’t do traffic patrol much, but he had been known to take a shift. She hadn’t been able to enjoy driving within the city since she’d caught the man’s scent.

She wanted him to realize he didn’t need to look for a mate, that he had a mate and she was right here in the town. There was nothing to slow a male cat’s roll like realizing he had a mate. On the other hand, she didn’t want the man to realize who exactly that mate was yet. She was still pissed about the almost daily turnover of lovers in his bed. So she’d enlisted the help of almost every cougar female she knew.

Chloe’s mates came by to see her almost every girls’ night they had. Today, Logan would definitely be by to see her. He’d worked nights last week and had just started the morning shift. So he hadn’t seen her all day. He’d come by just to see her and then he’d join Jason and the others at another bar. Leslie hoped John would be able to catch her scent off Logan, because she planned to make sure he had the scent of other cougar females on him as well.

“So, plan Man whore Take-down is in full swing?” Chloe met Leslie’s eyes.

Chloe was resplendent in a green and black top and a black skirt tonight. She looked good with her red hair falling down her back. The slight frown when she thought no one was looking did concern Les, as did the tightness in her shoulders and jaw.

There was something going on with that girl. Well, other than the whole trying to get pregnant thing and having enough sex to make every woman around her jealous. She wasn’t pregnant yet and last week, she’d been upset about that. But she’d seemed to have calmed down about that by the end of the conversation with them. So why was she tense and quiet tonight?

“Yeah, with luck and your big man’s unknowing cooperation, the big manwhore will realize he has a mate, but not know who the hell she is. I’ve got a few friends here and they’ll come into contact with Logan as he comes over here and as he leaves.” Les smiled at the thought. She’d like him to feel something close to the frustration she’d felt over the last weeks. She adjusted the position of the straps on her sleeveless violet top.

“You’re lucky I like you or I might get a little upset about the thought of other women touching my Logan.” Chloe narrowed her eyes on Leslie. “Anyone else suggests allowing women to bump into him and rub against him and I might have to bounce them across the parking lot. The only thing saving them is the fact that I know they’re doing it to help you leash that tomcat.”

“Thank you for being so cooperative.” Leslie smiled. “I can assure you that they don’t have any designs on your man, even if he is gorgeous, and are doing it only because I’m their friend.”

“Have you heard anything from said gorgeous man?” Shonna asked.

“Not—” Chloe’s voice cut off as her text tone cut through the lull of noise between songs. “Well, this is from him. He says he’ll be here in about five minutes and he’d like a big kiss since a quickie in the back room is out of the question.”

“More information than I ever needed to know about that.” Dixie scowled at Chloe.

“Maybe I should feel sorry about tormenting you, but I don’t. Mainly because you revel in doing the same to me.” Chloe grinned and took a long drink of her nonalcoholic cocktail. Wild Beats had become inventive with their offerings in that variety since Chloe had decided to get pregnant.

“Yeah, enjoy it, girlfriend, because I will be getting you back.” Dixie folded her arms across her chest.

“Will you?” Shonna glanced to Dixie. “You know you haven’t found your mates yet. There’s still the anxiety and issues that come with doing that. I’m sure she’ll enjoy watching you go through that the same as you did her.”

“And you’re in the same boat. You haven’t found your man.” Dixie turned glare at Shonna.

“Yeah, but I’ll only have to deal with one. Much easier and fewer issues.” Shonna chuckled. “I totally don’t envy you bears and cats that part.”

Two people stopped by the table. Les turned her head and smiled widely. She’d hoped the black-haired woman would stop by. She didn’t recognize the human woman beside her, but that wasn’t a surprise. She normally saw Maggie when they were at Pride functions.

“Everyone, I’d like to introduce Magdalena Black. She’s the sister to our illustrious alpha cat.” Leslie glanced over at her friends. “And she’s a good friend. I’ve known her since we were both kits in the same child care center.”

The others said hello, but Les saw them glance to the woman with Maggie.

“Hi, you can call me, Maggie. Almost everyone does. This is my friend, Penelope Steele. She goes by Penny though. This girl helped me get through college calculus.” Maggie gestured to the woman at her side.

Penny said hello. “Hi, I hope you don’t mind me being here. When Maggie told me what was up with the calling together of the cougar females, I had to meet you. A couple of my friends got hit by the John Dark sex them and kick them to the curb train. They totally weren’t expecting one night and then nothing more.”

“You have some experience with male cats?” Leslie tilted her head. The girl didn’t strike her as the type of woman who chased shifters for sex.

“Ah, no, Maggie clued me in early about shifters only getting serious with their mates. I’ve never been one for casual sex so if someone showed interest, I didn’t give them any encouragement. From what I know of mating, I was pretty sure that they’d let me know if they were my mate.” Penny smiled.

“Yeah, they would, but until they meet that woman, a good portion of shifter males are man whores.” Les shook her head.

“And afterward, they’re just stupid.” Maggie slid a glance at her friend.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it’ll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It’ll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.
Excerpt

As they topped the cliffs above the beach, Callon squealed, and Gethyon veered sharply from the boulders blocking their path. His fingers trembled in the steering gear, and the bike responded by swerving from side to side, his blurred vision bringing them too close to the cliff edge. He clicked on the automatics to steady their flight, and the bike settled.

Moonlight gave him a path to follow, but he switched on the night guidance systems anyway. Bright lines of color covered the central panel, projecting a screen before his eyes. Holographic images overlaid reality and highlighted the safe path ahead, but the lines shifted and broke. Gethyon blinked and shook his head, trying to clear it. How many times had Dephon hit him? Did he have a concussion? Every movement sent pain lancing through his skull, and he struggled to keep his focus. Could he make it home?

The bike jolted hard beneath them as though it had struck something. Callon screamed as Gethyon fought to right the craft, but another impact set them careering perilously close to the cliff edge.

He yanked the trilobyke toward safety, and straight into a collision with another modified bike. Both engines screamed as his opponent kept his bike abreast of Gethyon’s, the rider leaning hard into them. Gethyon drove his fingers deep into his controls to jerk his bike forward with a burst of acceleration, and the attacking craft dropped back. With a swift glance over his shoulder, he turned right, away from the cliffs, darting across the path of the slower craft as they left it behind.

A shape zoomed into view to his left, and he spared it a quick glance. Tyos, his augmented glider faster than Gethyon’s but lighter in frame, closed in on them and hovered inches from the rear vanes. To his right, another heavier trilobyke moved in alongside and nudged them.

“Land!” the rider of the trilobyke yelled at him.

Gethyon stared at him, and recognized the face under the clear visor even if he couldn’t put a name to it: another of Dephon’s companions. Did they really think he would do it? Or that they could force him to obey? They’d more likely kill him and Callon in the process. Were they insane, or just too drunk on alcohol and adrenaline to consider the consequences?

As if in answer, the heavier bike smashed against them, pushing them back toward the precipice. He forced his craft steady, but Tyos rammed into the rear vanes and they careened toward the cliff. Red lights pulsed from the console and a piercing alarm rose, drowning even Callon’s shrieks. He yanked back on the grips to brake, to at least slow their mad plunge, but the collision had sheared off a braking vane and they plummeted over the edge.

Excerpt

“I’ve never seen you at a party before. I thought you were a good little girl.” His teasing voice sent thrills throughout her body.

“Today’s my birthday.” Isabelle snuggled closer to him. His body seemed to surround hers.

“So, does that make you legal today?”

Isabelle nodded vigorously then groaned. Her head swam from the movement. Maybe, just maybe she’d had a bit much to drink. Lee would take care of her though. He’d promised.

“But not legal for drinking yet.”

Isabelle pouted then sniffed.

“So what? Most of the people here aren’t twenty-one.”

“Doesn’t make it right.”

Isabelle craned her head around to look at him. Surprised at the hard note in his voice.

“But you’ve been drinking since you were in high school.”

“Again, doesn’t make it right. So, you decided to cut loose now that you’re an adult?”

The small smirk at the side of his mouth fascinated her. Somehow the tip of her finger made its way there. His lips were strong but soft, warm against the softness of her finger. The scruff around his mouth prickled her finger as he rubbed his face against it.

“Don’t play with fire, little girl.” He nipped the tip of her finger as he winked at her, sending a zing through her body.

Isabelle giggled. Normally she thought herself out of Lee’s league, but tonight that didn’t bother her in the least. She’d had too many jello shots to care. Snuggled in his arms, his hands on her affected her more than any bit of alcohol could. Combining them gave her a warm glow.

Isabelle wiggled, the trail of his fingertips tickling her neck and circling her ear. She could feel her nipples tightening, glad for her push up bra. It made her boobs look fabulous, but was thick enough to hide her body’s reaction.

Lee chuckled in her ear, sending warmth pooling low in her belly. Isabelle caught her breath as he trailed his finger down her breast unerringly circling her nipple.

“Cat got your tongue, little girl?”

His warm breath in her ear, followed by a flick of his tongue had her gasping. She shifted, wiggling, trying to relieve the ache building in her. Lee pulled her closer, positioning her across one leg. One hand held her tightly by the hip. The other skimmed the top of her camisole dipping in to tease her nipple.

Isabelle gasped at the sensation. “Lee.” She didn’t know if she was encouraging or warning him away.

He chuckled, stroking her nipple until it stood out, obvious to anyone that bothered to look. He lowered his head, bending Isabelle over his arm as he nibbled her through her shirt. With a tug he pulled it aside exposing her breast before quickly sucking it into his mouth.

“Ah.” Isabelle arched offering herself to the warm suction of his mouth. She caught her breath, liquid heat pooling between her legs with each pull. Her toes curled. The noise of the party disappearing, all her senses focused on the sensations swirling in her body.

“Beautiful.” His voice muffled as he nursed.
Beverly Ovalle dabbled with writing on and off for years when her best friend finally dared her to submit a story to a writing contest. Beverly decided she had nothing to lose and since she’d always wanted to be an author sent it in and agonized for months waiting to hear back. Contract in hand she has never looked back.

Beverly has been obsessed with dragons and romance since she was a young girl, collecting dragon books and reading everything she could find on them even down to the care of real life dragons. She’s always been slightly panicked that the world as we know it will end, so has prepped for it, haunting survivalist pages and prepper projects she felt she needed in the event SHTF.

An avid fan of all romance, Beverly’s goal is to share her love of the written word and write the hot and erotic romances that she enjoys. She writes what she loves to read and it was only a matter of time before her obsessions crept into her writing for her to share. She hopes you enjoy her tales as much as she loves writing them.

A Navy Veteran, Beverly has traveled around the world and the United States enabling her to bring her settings to life, meeting and marrying her husband of twenty five years along the way for her own romance. Reading romances since the fourth grade she’s followed as the genre changed and spread into the vast cornucopia of romance offered today.

So in the last few weeks I've been trucking on Leslie's story, A Cougar's Mates. (Bliss is also moving along, by the way.)

That's great! I'm super excited about it. I've only had trouble with one part of the story hanging me up. I backed off for a night to look at it objectively and decided that I needed rethink that section. Since that time, the story has flowed.

The quandary mentioned in the blog title concerns a new character that's popped up in Leslie's story. Penny.

At the start of the story, I knew I was going to learn more about the cougars and meet some new characters. I knew I'd get to tell more about Leslie (that girl has secrets) and revisit those fabulous friends and see where life is taking them.

Penny is not a cougar; although, she is friends with one. She's a vet and very much human. She's with her friend when she meets Leslie and the girls. Now, Penny's quiet and hasn't said so much to this point in the story, but boy has she been occupying space in my head. Penny has a story and it's right there. Almost ready to be told.

But the quandary is that I wanted to get through the friends' stories first before expanding to other stories. The one problem with that is Dixie and Shonna aren't giving me much to go on with them.

On the other hand, Penny and her friend Maggie have already given me more than a glimpse into what's happening in their lives. And Penny has problems ahead of her. To tell you the truth, I'm really intrigued by Penny and want to dive into the story right now.

Must resist! I need to finish Leslie's book and Bliss as well. The second paranormal gargoyle will go in the lineup next. Then when there's an open space whichever Whyr story I choose.

Now, this isn't a bad place to be for me. I've got a story almost ready to go. I know I'll get to Dixie and Shonna whenever they get around to telling me about their mates. They don't seem to be in a rush to get mated though.

Part of me is going "But... But... This isn't how I planned it." In this case, if Dixie and Shonna don't step up and show me who their mates are and what their conflict is, Penny's story will be the next Whyr story I write.

I'm giving it time. Perhaps as I get closer to the end, I'll learn more about Dixie and Shonna's loves.

So what would you do?

Happy Reading!

So I'm working and making some good progress on the two WIP I'm working on. Not going to put up daily word count numbers here, because I'm still building this into a habit and there are some up and downs. Making this kind of progress keeps me excited, but I'm also learning some interesting things about both stories.

In the A Cougar's Mates. As in the above picture. Foxes are crazy. All right maybe not all of them. There are a few in this story that don't exemplify this slogan. But a good number of them exemplify the saying.

Leslie has a slight mean streak, but she's honest and takes accountability for it. You'll see when I finish this book and get it published. I'm working to get it ready as fast as I can while at the same time, I work to get it right.

In Fiery Bliss-- still not sure about that title-- this week, it's all about the past. Violet's past and that of Alden Glen. The danger's coming from somewhere and they'll have to dig deep to find the truth.

Until they do discover that, the danger will continue to plague the town.

This book is farther along than Cougar so I know much more about it. I like Violet's strength even if she isn't what anyone would call a warrior woman. Theron is also someone a character I've come to admire. He's building a future, but not too long ago, he thought that his life could be counted in months.

The picture above is what I've been doing off and on for the last couple of days. It's a timeline of all of the events in Touch of the Moon. I had a hand drawn one on a piece of paper, but it was indecipherable and I'll need to keep track of the events of what happened before, during, and after the story, because there will be another. I need to keep track of what happened and who did what. There is some carry over into the next book. That's why it's color coded.

Each viewpoint character + the villain has a color and new characters will get their own as well. I needed a way to put in new things after I finished listing the main points. It's basic, but it will let me get a clear view of everything that's going on.

As is normal near the end of a book, I'm flooded with ideas. I'd probably think I was sick if I ended a book without my mind spinning with a lot of "ooh, shiny" moments to distract me. None of them related to what I'm finishing. What this means is that I just put down some notes for three more books that will follow what I intended to be a four book series. The last of those three might lead to more books, but except for the first one, the ideas are mere sketches and need a lot of work before their ready to write.

At the time of writing this, Guardian is sitting on the back burner waiting to be revised. I'll pick it back up when it's had time to fade from the front of my mind. I know I'll have some fixing to do with that one, but I'm keeping a positive attitude about it. One book is submitted. The other is still being revised. I'm a little behind where I hoped to be on it, but I'm still feeling really good about this book.

Writing in general for the last few days has been great. I must be doing something right.

I've got the normal nervousness after submitting. The uh oh did I check this, did I title that right jitters. But I'm focusing on the books I'm working on now to get past that.

I like Les's new book so far. Let me just say that she surprised me with an evil plan. In other news, I'm working on solidifying the plot for the next in paranormal contemporary Gargoyle and all I need to fall into place is the outer conflict.
I thought I'd share a scene that inspired a story I might be starting soon if I can get a few things hammered out. I call this Saving Magic, because it's one of the things I know about the story and world. They have to save their world's magic.

Cheli woke slowly. The heavy lethargy of deep sleep slowly began to fade. She noticed she was warm, very warm. It was a little odd. The last few days, she'd been almost uncomfortably cool in the mornings. Not that she expected it to be warm and cozy in a tent in the foothills of the mountains in fall. It was going to get cold before they could head home.

She opened her eyes and started as she saw a male face not too far from hers. She recognized the male. It was Ridge. He wasn't supposed to be here.

His brown hair hung in tight braids and his face still bore the face paint the men had on almost every day she'd seen them. Then again, she hadn't ever seen them when they were completely safe or comfortable. They hadn't been in there home territory.

She had left the area with her brother and his men while they were away for two days. How had those men found them? Her brother and the other men had been careful about leaving a trail.

She blinked, hoping this a nightmare or figment of her imagination. No, still there. And luckily he was still asleep. She could slip out of the tent and go find out how in the hell her brother had let the men into her damn tent.

He and his twin, Gannon had been courting her; although, she hadn't recognized it as courting until recently. They'd given her a few small gifts. A piece of fruit and a bracelet.

She hadn't realized that accepting those gifts constituted an acceptance of their courtship, but this... She hadn't expected this, especially when she'd thought she wouldn't see them again.

She tried to get up, but couldn't. It felt like something more substantial than blankets covered her. She glanced down and saw a wing draped across her. That wasn't Ridge's wing, because he was in full human form. She turned her head to the other side and saw a dark skinned gargoyle sprawled next to her.

That had to be Gannon, but she'd never seen him in this form. This wasn't good. She should definitely get out of here, before they woke up. Since sitting and easing out from between them was out, she'd have to see if she could ease her way upward and from beneath the wing. She was lucky her movements hadn't woken him already. She eased forward, pulling herself with only her arms.

She managed to get out from under the wing and to her feet. With a glance back, she hurried to get dressed and out before they noticed the difference. She left her shoes, because she wasn't going far, just outside. Hopefully, she'd find her brother so she could yell at him for letting those two into her tent.

She looked around as soon as the flap fell back into place. She spotted her brother across the camp. He stood with one of Gannon and Ridge's. Her eyes narrowed and she stalked over to him. She put her hands on her hips and glared up at her black haired brother.

"Seriously, you let them into my tent?" She tapped her foot as she waited for whatever answer he came up with.

"Let them? They arrived in the middle of the night and were in camp before the sentries even saw them. I was woken as they were settling in. They were already at your tent before I realized what was happening." He scowled at her. "I told them to put up their own fucking tent. What was I supposed to do?"

"Get in front of them. Make enough noise to wake me." She swept her hand wide. "Anything."

Arms came around her and lifted her off her feet. "He would have had a few more bruises than the last time. I think he learned his lesson about getting between us."

Ridge. Fuck, for such a big man, he was quiet on his feet.

"Come on. You do not want Gannon coming out here for you. We need to talk about you disappearing on us." His lips brushed over her shoulder.

I hope you enjoyed it!
Sara Walter Ellwood

Releasing June 21, 2016 in both ebook and print

Blurb:
Sex, drugs, and country music. That was the lifestyle for Emily Kendall, a Texas girl who hit it big on the country music charts—until she found herself pregnant and battling addiction. Now out of rehab and seeking a new life for herself and her unborn child, Emily returns to her hometown of McAllister. The last thing she’s looking for is trouble, no matter how good it looks in uniform…

A widower, single father, and former Army Ranger struggling with PTSD, Sheriff EJ Cowley has his own demons to battle while keeping folks safe. The last thing he needs is a troubled celebrity speeding through town in her bright red Maserati. But when someone from Emily’s past threatens her safety and the peace of McAllister, EJ has no choice but to protect her. And soon both will learn there’s more to the other than meets the eye. And that wounded hearts can love again…

Excerpt:
“I’m sorry, but I can’t ride you right now.” Emily kissed the horse above her nose, and Tink nuzzled her cheek. “We’ll go out tomorrow. How about that?”

“I remember when you rode that horse everywhere you went.”

Startled by the deep voice, she turned. EJ Cowley leaned on the top rail of the fence, and from the look of it, he’d been there for a while. He’d changed out of the brown uniform of the McAllister County sheriff’s department. She couldn’t help looking him over. Dressed in worn boots, faded jeans, a blue western shirt, and a brown Stetson, he epitomized every sexy cliché existing about how a cowboy should look.

Her heart sped up at the way those clothes fit him. Which irritated the hell out of her. She turned back to her horse and stroked her long face. “What are you doing here?”

“My sister-in-law watches my son while I’m at work.”

She stilled. Had she been quasi-lusting after a married man? Hadn’t he married Raquel Marshall? She glanced over her shoulder at his left hand. No ring. But then a lot of cowboys didn’t wear their wedding bands when they were working. The risk of getting it caught on something was too great.

Despite his clothes, he must have come off duty as the county’s ticket-happy sheriff not too long ago. She patted Tink’s shoulder. “See you in the morning, girl.” As she headed toward the man, who was not hiding the fact he appreciated what he saw, she guessed he wasn’t still married, but she’d been around the world a few times and knew not to take a man’s blatant interest as proof of anything. “You have a son. How is Raquel these days?”

She was close enough to notice his gray eyes had turned as haunted as a gravestone when she asked about his wife. He looked to the left, toward his brother’s house, and from the way a muscle twitched in his jaw, he must have gritted his teeth.

“She committed suicide two years ago today.”

“Oh… I’m sorry. I didn’t know,” she stammered. What else had happened to the people she’d once considered friends she was unaware of? “How old is your little boy?”

He took a deep breath and met her gaze again. She studied his eyes as they moved over her face. God, he had the most fascinating eyes. They weren’t truly blue, but the gray was an odd shade. Too light to be slate, but too dark to be silver. They reminded her of her great-grandmother’s pewter candleholders.

“Two.”

As silence engulfed them, she turned to head for the gate. She had no idea what was up with the sheriff, and she didn’t like her desire to ask. EJ Cowley may have filled her schoolgirl fantasies, but she wasn’t the wide-eyed kid who crushed after the local cowboy-turned-soldier.

“Emwee?”

At the sound of her name, she glanced past EJ to the porch. Johnny stood there with his toy lightsaber and x-wing. She promised to play a video game with her brother. “Well, it was good seeing you again, EJ.”

She was halfway across the drive when his voice stopped her. “By the way”--He cleared his throat--“I lost your ticket...”

Stopping in the middle of the driveway, she looked over her shoulder at him. His face puckered as if he’d eaten a lemon soaked in vinegar. He took his hat off and ran a hand through his short hair. The setting sun turned the tresses a gleaming gold.

“You lost it?” Damned if she’d make it easy on him. “After going through all the trouble of stopping me a mile away from home?”

Setting his hat back on his head, he cleared his throat again and stood with his feet apart. He gave a quick jerk with his head in the affirmative. “Can’t find it anywhere. No ticket. No proof. You’re off the hook.”

Holy crap, he was gorgeous, and heat flooded her to pool in her belly. She turned, not wanting him to see the way he affected her, and headed for the porch, then lied through her teeth. “Good, because I’ve already tossed it.” She had every intention of paying the fine, but she was glad he lost the ticket. No decent cop would lose a ticket. Maybe he did it out of remembrance of their childhood friendship. Or was he as attracted to her as she was to him?

With an inward shake of herself, she didn’t let a possible answer formulate in her muddled brain. She couldn’t be anything to him. You’re pregnant with another man’s child and don’t need the added stress! At the door into the kitchen, she ruffled Johnny’s hair and turned, ignoring her self-admonishment. “See you around, EJ.”

“Yeah… See you around.” He tipped his hat and turned on his heel to amble toward his extended cab Silverado.

From inside the screen door, she watched the way he filled out the backside of his Wrangler’s and muttered, “Hell yeah, I hope so.”
